When they arrive at the centre of the City of London, they leave the boat

coloured hats. There are also musicians and singers who sing and dance with people around.

To have a good conversation is a pleasure for most people. But not every conversation is good.

Sometimes there are uncomfortable silences while people try to think of something to say. Some

conversations are one-sided. One person asks all the questions, and the other just gives one-word

answers. A good conversation needs two or more people to keep it going.

To get the ball rolling in a conversation, ask something about the other person. "What do you

do?" is a good place to start. Or simply say, "Tell me about yourself." Most people love a chance to talk

about themselves.

As the other person begins to respond to (回应) your question, look for common ground. If

you ask someone about their weekend, the person could talk about what they did. Then you can share

what you did and even your plans for the coming weekend.

When the other person is talking, it is important to be interested in them. Listen carefully and do

not cut in to add your experience. When they finish, ask some more questions. Don't allow your eyes to

wander around(游离)as they talk. That gives the message that you're not really interested in them.

4

Besides, if you're answering a question, don't go on and on. Give an answer and stop. A good

conversation is a little like a tennis game, in which the ball goes back and forth. Also, avoid yes/no

questions. They can stop a conversation. Instead, ask open-ended questions using what or why.

A conversation should end well, too. You can say, "I need to run now." You may also give a reason.

Say something like, "I really need to get going. My class starts in 20 minutes."

Now, go out and enjoy a good conversation!

26. Which of the following is helpful for having a good conversation?

A. Give one-word answers to keep the conversation going.

B. Ask something about the other person to start a conversation.

C. Talk more about yourself to get the other person interested.

D. Cut in to add your own experience when the other person is talking.

27. What does the underlined phrase "common ground" in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Proper replies. B. Good examples. C. Different opinions. D. Shared interest.

28. According to the writer, how are a good conversation and a tennis game alike?

A. They are both based on interest. B. They are both two-sided activities.

C. They are both ways of communication. D. They are both improved through practice.

29. In which part of the newspaper can you read the passage?

A. LIFE SKILLS B. SCHOOL TIME C. MAGIC WORLD D. NEWS DESK

People have treasured gold for thousands of years. 50 just what makes gold so valuable?

First is tis shiny and has an 51 (attract)yellow color making it ideal for use in jewellery. Second,

it is very easy to be 52 (shape).Because gold is soft and easy to work with, it can be made into

thin pieces that do not break. These pieces can then be used to add decorative details to artwork or

gold jewellery can be passed down in a family. Fourth, gold is an excellent conductor(导体)of

electricity, making it 54 good choice for electronics.

One of the most important reasons that gold is valuable, 55 , is that it is rare. Although gold

exists in many places throughout the world, it is not easy to find or to mine(采掘). People who mine

gold usually have to work very hard to get even tiny amounts of the precious(珍贵的) metal. The fact

that it is both beautiful and 56 (use) makes people want more of this precious metal than they can

七、阅读表达(共3小题;60题1分,61题2分,62题3分,满分6分)

阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题,并将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。

Habit is something we do almost unconsciously (无意识地). An example of this would be

having breakfast or saying "please" and "thank you". Good habits can be part of our daily life. But if

we don't have those habits, how can we form them? According to a study published by the European

Journal of Social Psychology(心理学), it takes about 66 days to form a new habit. Depending only

on willpower may not be the answer.

Questioning why you want something could be the first key. Do you want to lose weight because

you want to be healthier or look prettier? Keeping the goal in your mind may help you stick to a habit.

Try not to be influenced by your mood-a bad mood may mean you don't want to do anything.

Then, you should also avoid trying to change too much at once---remember that taking steps

slowly matters. Giving up all your favorite foods, keeping exercising, and stopping drinking at the

same time will probably result in failure. But don't worry about failing--- just start again!

Finally, don't do things outside your comfort zone (舒适区). If you hate carrots, don't try hard to

add them to your diet just to be healthier. Eat something you like! It might not be quick, but if you

follow these tips, you may be able to change something for the better or kick a bad habit.

60. What is the passage mainly about?
