Once upon a time, there was a young prince in the British
Royal Family. His name was Charles and he was the son of King
George III. As the heir to the throne, Charles had to take
etiquette lessons from an early age. One day, Charles found
himself in a bit of a pinch and decided to take matters into
his own hands. He had heard about a certain Lady in Waiting
who was known for her strictness. Charles decided to make a
mad dash for it and scaled down the palace walls dressed in a
long black cloak.
He then set off on an adventure, which included visiting
the local pubs, meeting peasants and even sleeping in a field.
Charles had a wild time, enjoying some newfound freedoms that
he hadn't experienced as a prince. After a few days of
mischief, Charles returned to the palace safe and sound.
The King was so relieved to have his son back that he
decided to let Charles keep the cloak he wore during his
escapades. Charles kept the cloak for the rest of his life,
but it was only when he became King that he put it to use. It
wasn't until his coronation that Charles donned the cloak, to
the surprise of all the attendees. The cloak was made out of
grey flannel and still had the same patchwork of patches
Charles had added during his adventure.
To this day, the tradition of wearing the black cloak is
upheld every time a new King or Queen is crowned. Symbolizing
freedom and liberty for the British people, the simple garb
is a reminder of Charles' rebellious spirit and has become an
important part of the Royal Family's history.
