The Elephant Men program is the creation of Reginald Caster and Robert Harris, two friends who
grew up together in a poor neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee. They grew up, moved away, and
became successful. They remained friends and shared an aim. The aim was to help boys aged 9 to 13
in their old neighborhood. They wanted to act as role models for young boys and to stop them from
getting into trouble as they got older.
They called their program The Elephant Men after reading how elephant families in Africa surround
and protect their young when they are in danger. Reginald and Robert’s program supports the young
men in inner cities who are at risk of losing their lives to drugs. Their idea is “protecting our youth
with the power and belief of the elephant”.
They look for different ways for young men to build respect for themselves and others. One way is
to use sports, especially basketball, to bring them together. Another successful program is a four-
week summer work program that includes more than 100 young boys. The boys pick up rubbish
across the city in exchange for a $200 gift card with which they can buy school clothes. To be part
of the program, the boys have to get a reference (
介绍信
) from an adult at their school who is
willing to write something good about them. This gives the boys a reason to do well in school.
“We know our program works,” says Reginald. “We have some kids in college now and the best day
of the year for us is the weekend before school starts, when we see our boys in the stores buying
their clothes and books for school.”

People may set an alarm on the phone or clock that sounds like this: beep beep beep(
嘟嘟声
). That
hard, unpleasant sound may be making it harder to shake off the sleepy feeling in the morning
known as grogginess (
东倒西歪
). So, is there a better way to wake up? A recent study says yes. The
answer is music.
The study, carried out by researchers in Australia, involved 50 people. The researchers found that
people who wake up to musical alarms reported feeling more awake and alert. Stuart McFarlane, a
lead writer of the study stated, “We are very surprised by these findings as one might expect a
harsh(
难听的
)beeping sound to be more successful at waking up a person.”
Sleep inertia(
惯性
)is another term for grogginess. It means a person has a heavy feeling when
waking up, and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping. McFarlane said people need to
better understand sleep inertia’s harmful effects on human performance later in the day.
Not everyone will experience the full effect. But for those who do, “care should be taken” when
performing duties that require a top performance within this period, he said. This includes
“dangerous tasks like driving or riding our bikes” shortly after waking up. The same is true for
people who work in dangerous situations shortly after they wake, including firefighters and pilots.
So, what makes musical alarms better for waking up? The researchers think the music may be more
successful in reducing sleep inertia because it has several tones, compared to the single tone of a
“beeping” alarm. McFarlane said that the changes over time between the music tones may help
increase a person’s attention when waking from sleep.
And is there a kind of music that is best to wake up to? There may be, McFarlane said. “We could
suggest alarm sounds that are tuneful (
和谐的
) and easy to hum or sing along with. The current
sounds I have been using include ‘Close to me’ by the Cure and ‘Borderline’ by Madonna.” No
matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters — a lot.

China and India are leaders in improving global tree cover, a new study based on NASA research
showed.
They took a 31.8 percent part together of the total global new leaf area between 2000 and 2017.
China played a major role, adding 25 percent to this increase, and India added 6.8 percent, followed
by Canada and Russia.
The study in the Nature Sustainability journal shows that more than 5.5 million square kilometers of
green leaf area was added globally. Since 2000, there has been a 5 percent increase in global green
cover, it said.
“The greening over the last twenty years shows an increase in leaf area on plants and trees which is
as large as the area of the entire Amazon rainforest,” Chi Chen, a Boston University researcher and
leader of the study told Nature Sustainability. Large plantation activities to protect forests in China
contributed nearly 42 percent to the country’s green cover, and agriculture (
农业
) added another 32
percent. In India, 82 percent of the increase in leaf area was because of agriculture.
“China and India take up one-third of the greening, but hold only nine percent of the planet’s land
area covered in green plants,” Chi Chen told NASA Earth Observatory. “That is a surprising finding,
considering the land degradation (
退化
) in countries with large populations.”
Boston University’s research team first detected an increase in global green cover in the 1990s but
were unsure what contributed to the increase. Finally, with the help of NASA’s Terra and Aqua
satellites research, they managed to find out the increase in leaf cover from different areas and
places.

For someone who enjoys gardening, gifts for their garden can be very thoughtful and appreciated by
them. They can be tools to make gardening easier. Or they can be decorations (
装饰品

garden more attractive. 16
High quality garden tools can make excellent garden gift ideas. These may be designed with flowers
or other gardening pictures on them, or they may be personalized for the gift receiver. Any user-
friendly tools for gardeners can be a useful gift. 17

18 If a gardener already has a certain style of decoration in his/her garden, try to buy something that
fits that style.
19 There are many ideas to be found online — using items such as old wine bottles to create lights,
for example. The gift receiver will certainly appreciate the time it took to make a gift by hand.
Some garden gifts can be very useful. If you know the gift receiver likes birds, for example, you
might choose to buy a bird feeder or birdbath for the garden. A stone bench is a more expensive yet
