Elon Musk is an entrepreneur, engineer, inventor and
investor. He is the founder, CEO, and lead designer of Space
Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX), CEO and
product architect of Tesla, Inc., founder of The Boring
Company, and co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI. He was also
the founder and initial co-chairman of SolarCity, which
merged with Tesla in 2016.
Musk's educational background includes degrees in
economics and physics from the Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania and a degree in physics from the
University of Pennsylvania.
Musk founded his first company, Zip2, in 1995. The
company provided online city guide software, and was acquired
by Compaq in 1999. In 2002, he founded SpaceX to create
rockets and spacecraft for commercial space travel. Musk's
Tesla Motors became the first publicly traded American car
company to manufacture and sell electric cars. In addition,
Musk founded The Boring Company in 2016 to develop tunnel
boring machines to counteract traffic congestion.
Musk has been involved with several philanthropic efforts
and believes that sustainable energy and technology are
essential for humanity's future. He has invested in renewable
energy initiatives, such as SolarCity, and is a major
proponent of colonizing Mars using SpaceX's current rocket
technology.
Moreover, Musk has been heavily involved in artificial
intelligence research, founding OpenAI in 2015 to advance
digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to
benefit humanity. In 2017, Musk co-founded Neuralink, a
company devoted to developing brain-computer interfaces, and
has since become an active speaker on the subject of AI
safety.
Musk has received a number of awards and honors,
including the IEEE Honorary Membership, Time Magazine's
Person of the Year Award, and the Guinness World Record for
"most funding raised by a CEO." His dedication to developing
new technologies have also earned him the titles of "21st
Century Industrialist" and "Iron Man", a nod to his
involvement in the Iron Man series of films.
