I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

is a poem about nature. Wordsworth uses his

poetic language to bring us into a beautiful world where there are full of fragrant

daffodils, verdant trees and gentle breeze. When we read this poem, we share the

melancholy as he “wandered as a cloud” and enjoy the delight the moment his

heart “with pleasure fills”. Besides, Wordsworth uses various techniques to

describe the beautiful scenery. We can see the harmony between human and

nature from the whole poem.

Firstly, the plot of this poem is very simple. The speaker is wandering as if he is

a cloud, seeing a field of daffodils. His emotion has changed with the view of

wonderful landscape. And the daffodils have a deep influence on his life.

Whenever he feels dull, depressed or lonely, he thinks about the daffodils and

cheers himself up. For him, daffodil is a symbol of nature, which he is fond of.

Actually, he is not so stuck by the time he saw them. Only when he himself was

alone, in other words, much later after the time he came across them, does he

remember them and feel relief and comfort.

Secondly, Wordsworth adopts many rhetoric devices in this poem. For

instance, the poem makes a comparison between “I wandered lonely” and “a

cloud” with the aid of simile. This conveys a feeling of lonely to us all. Although

clouds are free enough and sometimes float with breeze, they are always lonely.

Just like the stars twinkling on the Milky Way, which we are much familiar with. We

all have the experience when staring at the starry sky by our own far away from

home, we miss our family and friends. Time seems to stay still or even prolong.

Without their accompany, we feel so lonely. Yet, as the speaker continues his stroll,

he is surprised to find everything has changed. Though it seems that the speaker is

lonely like clouds, in fact, he is no longer alone with the company of daffodils. They

accompany each other in harmony---the speaker walks, the daffodils dance. The

shift of the speaker’s mood from loneliness to happiness manifests the theme of

this poem, which is nature, can have a great influence upon human beings. Also,

the clever use of personification endows the natural things with human being’s

character. Through the vivid description of daffodils, we can realize the deep love

of the poet towards nature.

What’s more, the last stanza reveals that it is a memory of the speaker

through the change from past tense to present tense. It is the unforgettable

memory of daffodils that affect him a lot. Nevertheless long time has passed by;

he will always be cheered up by the vigor of daffodils, which saves him from bad

emotion. And the whole poem is filled with emotionally strong words like “golden”

“dancing” and “bliss”. By the time we read this poem, a picturesque scenery

will came into our view. It is so energetic and lovely that our heart will beat as the

daffodils dance. Thus we will forget all the distress and turn to be happy.

All in all, this poem shows us beautiful scenery and passes on a joyful feeling

to us, which enable us to be free from our daily trifles and enjoy the legacy of

nature. It teaches us to keep our eyes open on those things around us. Daffodils

represent all wonderful matters that make our life colorful and full of excitement.

Also, we need to respect and be concerned with nature as it is our friend. Human

beings can live harmony with nature.
