My Big Sis Starts University Again
My big sister Clara just started a new semester at the
university. She's a junior now, which means she only has two
more years to go until she finishes and becomes a grown-up for
real. I'm really proud of her for working so hard, but it also seems
really difficult being a university student. Let me tell you all about
the struggles she's been having!
First of all, she had to move back into her tiny apartment
near campus after being home for winter break. I went with mom
and dad to help her move all her stuff, and it took forever! She
had so many boxes of books, clothes, and basic things like plates
and blankets. Her apartment is basically just one room with a
bathroom, so it's a super tight fit for all her belongings. I don't
know how she doesn't feel cramped living in such a little space.
Then, she had to get her class schedule figured out. Clara
spent hours on the computer, trying to plan the perfect schedule
that didn't have too many early mornings or late nights. But no
matter what she did, there were always some classes that met at
really inconvenient times. Like one of her big lectures is from
8-9:30am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. That's so early!
If I had to be up and ready for class by 7:30 every Monday, I'd be
a zombie.
On top of the crazy schedule, my sister is taking a whopping
18 credit hours this semester. That's like 6 classes! I can't even
imagine having that much homework and that many tests to
prepare for. Just thinking about it makes my head spin. Two of
her classes also have labs, which are extra work sessions she has
to attend every week. It's a whole lot to juggle if you ask me.
But probably the worst part so far has been getting her
textbooks. The ones for all her STEM classes were super
expensive - like 200-300 each! Those publishers really take
advantage of poor college kids. Clara had to take out extra
student loans just to be able to afford her books this semester.
It's really unfair if you think about it. How are students supposed
to be able to pay all that money and also pay rent, groceries, and
everything else? No wonder she's always stressed about
finances.
Another problem Clara is dealing with is her new work-study
job. Since her tuition and expenses are so high, she has to work
