护理专业女生比男生多的原因英语作文

Why Are There More Girls Than Boys in Nursing School?

My big sister is in college studying to become a nurse. When

she told me about her classes, I noticed that almost all her

classmates are girls! There are only a couple of boys in her whole

program. I thought that was really weird, so I asked her why

nursing has so many more girls than boys. Here's what she told

me:

Nursing is a job where you help take care of people when

they are sick or hurt. Nurses give patients their medicine, check

their vital signs like temperature and blood pressure, assist

doctors during operations, and lots of other important tasks in

the hospital. They have to be really caring, patient, nurturing

people.

My sister said that from a very young age, girls are often

encouraged to play games and do activities that involve

nurturing roles. Like when we play house and girls pretend to be

the mommy taking care of the baby doll. Or school projects

where we practice feeding and holding a fake baby. Even the

toys marketed towards girls tend to be things like baby dolls,

cooking sets, and playhouses rather than action figures or

building toys.

So girls grow up being trained for nurturing types of careers

like nursing, teaching, childcare and other jobs involving caring

for people's needs. It's not that boys can't also be nurturing, but

society doesn't emphasize those skills as much for them when

they're little.

Another reason is that nursing has historically been seen as a

female profession, kind of like how construction workers and

firefighters are usually male-dominated fields. Way back in the

1800s, nursing was one of the few professional jobs open to

women at that time. Women like Florence Nightingale basically

founded modern nursing practices. So from the beginning,

nursing became a career path for women.

Even though men can obviously be amazing nurses too, that

stereotype of it being a "woman's job" has kind of stuck around.

Some people still have old-fashioned attitudes that nursing,

teaching, etc. are better suited for females. My sister said some

of the boys in her classes felt a little self-conscious at first being

in such a female-dominated major. But they got over it once they

saw how awesome and respected the nursing profession is!

Personality-wise, my sister thinks girls may be drawn more

towards nursing because girls tend to be nurturers, good

communicators, detail-oriented and have lots of empathy.

Nursing requires having great bedside manners, being gentle

and compassionate with patients, and not getting squeamish

around things like blood or bodily fluids. Maybe on average,

more girls tend to have the kind of caring, emotional personality

that meshes well with nursing duties.

However, there are definitely boys with those traits too! And

males can absolutely be exceptional nurses. It's just that

proportionally, more girls seem to gravitate towards the caring

professions based on interests, personality types and social

conditioning from a young age.

My sister's favorite nursing instructor is actually a man, and

he's one of the best teachers because of how wise and caring he

is. And some of her guy friends make awesome nurses because

of how attentive and dedicated they are. So it's not like boys

can't be great nurses at all. It's just that, for various reasons, girls

seem to have more interest in pursuing that career.

That's why my sister's program is made up of mostly females.

In an ideal world, there would be an equal ratio because caring

doesn't have a gender! Nurses should be nurturing people,

period, regardless of if they're male or female.

I told my sister that when I grow up, I might want to be a

nurse too! She said that would be awesome and that we

definitely need more and more boys joining nursing. I like feeling

helpful and taking care of people when they're sick or hurt. I'm a

pretty nurturing kid in general - just ask my parents how much I

love my baby dolls and stuffed animals! So maybe I'll be a great

nurse someday, just like my big sister. Whether I turn out to be a

boy nurse or a girl nurse, the most important thing is being a

good, compassionate nurse for my patients. I can't wait!
