Are you ready to take the Duolingo English proficiency test? It might be a smart decision if

you’re applying to mostly institutions that accept it.

About Duolingo English Test (DET)

The Duolingo English Test is an English proficiency test that many institutions in the United

States and Canada use to determine foreign candidates’ qualification for admission.

This exam is comparable to other English language proficiency tests like TOEFL and IELTS.

It assesses one’s abilities to speak, listen, write, and read English; however, the significant

distinction is that you do not have to go to a test center for DET. Students can take the test from

the comfort of their own homes. All they need is a computer and access to the Internet.

Duolingo English Test Sections

Before the exam begins, each test laker will overview the test and the various criteria.

Here is the outline overview structure of the test.

1. Quick Setup

At the start of the test, each applicant has 5 minutes to complete the introductory tasks.

Ensure that their laptop or computer, camera, speakers, and microphone are all 21working

properly.

Provide their government-issued identification card.

Read through Duolingo’s exam rules and regulations.

2. Adaptive Questions

Candidates win have 45 minutes to attempt the questions displayed on the screen while

staying within the time limit.

3. Video Interview & Writing Sample

The Duolingo English Test prompts candidates to answer one of two questions chosen at

random from a pool of hundreds of questions in the last 10 minutes of the Duolingo English Test.

In the following 10 minutes, candidates will have 30 seconds to select between the two

options.

The Duolingo English test will give the video-speaking sample 1-3 minutes, while the

writing sample is 3-5 minutes.

Scoring Guide for the Duolingo English Test

Candidates will not be put at a disadvantage for providing wrong or partially correct

responses. Partially accurate answers may even earn candidates half credit.

Candidates who miss a question, on the other hand, may lose a higher percentage of their

score than those who answer a question wrong. Hence, applicants must respond to all of the

questions.

1

B

Xing Eryang, who founded the Douban topic in 2021, is a 31-year-old female resident in

Beijing and is amazed to find her “slash (

斜杠

) life” philosophy echoed by so many of her peers.

After graduating in 2014, Xing landed her job at a public institution. While staying diligent

about her daytime work, she is developing her hobbies, including stand-up comedy, sharing video

blogs and podcasting (

播客

), into secondary careers during her downtime.

“I prefer the word ‘slash’ because a diverse lifestyle is like using a knife to cut our life into

different parts. One part works hard during the daytime, while the other part can still chase after

truth, goodness and inner beauty during our personal time,” she explains.

A 26-vear-old woman nicknamed Weiheng, from Guangzhou, and Tang Yuhan, a 27-year-old

man in Anhui province, are both participants in the online thread, with their stories obtaining

thousands of likes so far.

The two are both musicians in their spare time, even though they are thousands of miles apart

and have different jobs in media and finance. Weiheng is now a lead singer in a band after work,

while Tang plays the guitar in a death metal group.

Their passion for music has grown since college and they didn’t abandon their enthusiasm,

even after entering the workplace. Though they both faced doubts and worries from their family

and colleagues at first, they stuck to their beliefs and won the respect and understanding of others.

The two music enthusiasts make use of their nighttime to rehearse and then perform on

holidays and weekends. Weiheng’s band, Flouting Soul, has released eight songs and signed a

contract with a music agency, ready to launch albums and get down to a concert tour.

The “slash life” craziness shows that along with China’s economic development, our society

is becoming more and more diversified, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment. Young

people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They lend to

practice a carpe diem (

及时行乐

) philosophy and create their own identities.

4

Why did Xing call her life a “slash” one?

A

Because her life is cut into different parts by an invisible slash.

B

Because she preferred the word “slash” when she was young.

C

Because she developed her hobbies into secondary careers.

D

Because Douban requires her to choose “slash” as a topic.

5

What does Tang Yuhan think of his slash life?

A

Disgusting.

B

Favourable.

C

Funny.

D

Frustrating.

6

What is the purpose of the last paragraph?

A

To provide career guidance.

B

To analyze a cultural difference.

C

To conclude from the phenomenon

D

To share a unique life experience.

7

What is the main idea of the text?

A

Xing Eryang founded the Douban topic “slash life”.

B

Young people prefer “slash life” to their real lives.

C

China’s economy develops fast due to “slash life”.

D

“Slash life” trend allows workers to chase their dreams.

C

The African penguin is expected to go extinct in the wild in just over a decade, given its

current population decline. The main reason is a lack of food caused by disturbance to ocean

conditions from global heating and competition from the commercial fishing industry. According

to a study, scientists have identified a possible additional cause, one that is an entirely new threat

and that further prevents the penguins from finding food: noise pollution from marine (

海洋的

)

ships in a bay.

Since 2016, a new shipping practice has started at Algoa Bay. The bay offers ship-to-ship

refueling for ships anchored offshore. Since the start of this practice, marine traffic in the bay has

doubled. The number of bulk carriers (

散货船

) pulling into the bay has increased by ten times as

much. Thus the noise levels in the area had doubled and the population of penguins has dropped

sharply. High noise levels affect the ability of marine animals to find food, communicate or

navigate properly.

Researchers used data from ship identification tools to estimate underwater noise from

passing ships. They also attached underwater microphones and accelerometers (

感应器

) to some

of the penguins. Recording the noise will tell researchers what the penguins are hearing, if they’re

talking while hunting, if they’re changing their movements in response to noise, and if the noise is

drowning out their hunting conversations. This will allow researchers to determine whether the

sound disturbance is a direct cause of the penguins’ ongoing difficulties in finding sufficient food.

The study is the first to explore he effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on seabirds and the

consequences of offshore shipping activities on underwater noise levels. Experts are considering

proposing various global best-practice approaches to reduce some of the impacts of noise

pollution, such as policies that limit the number and size of ships allowed into a bay of this kind.

“We also need more scientific monitoring of noise, before these measures are put in place and

afterward, so that we have a proper understanding of what works.” a researcher said.

8

What is caused by the noise pollution?

A

The penguins’ lack of food.

B

The penguins’ proper navigation.

C

People’s communication disability.

D

The commercial competition.

9

Why did scientists attach microphones to penguins?

A

Because they wanted to study the way of relieving marine traffic pressure.

B

Because they could determine and analyze the source of ocean noise pollution

C

Because it helped to calculate underwater noise levels caused by different ships.

D

Because the impact of ocean on penguins’ hunting behavior could be found.

10

How can the noise pollution be reduced?

A

By exploring the real effects of ocean traffic.

B

By restricting the ships to go into the bay.

C

By banning all the offshore shipping activities.

D

By increasing ship-to-ship refueling activities.

11

What will researchers probably do next?

A

Evaluate the risk of the noise.

B

Establish a monitoring system.

C

Put the measures in place.

D

Try to understand what happens.

D

Have you ever lost something in a hard-to-reach space, like behind a couch or a cupboard?

Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to squeeze in and out? New innovations in the field of robotics

will soon be able to make this mice idea into a reality.

In a study published on Jan 25 in the science journal Matter, engineers from The Chinese

University of Hong Kong and Carnegie Mellon University in the US have developed small robots

that can quickly change back and forth from liquid to solid states.

According to the website Mashable. the scientists were inspired by sea cucumbers. They are

able to change the stiffness (

僵硬度

) of their body or reduce the potential for physical damage.

The robots in the study were made from gallium (

), a soft meta with a low melting point of 30

C

The scientists then used changes in the magnetic field to control the magnetic particles inside

the gallium material to provide heat. This heat then allowed the robots to change between solid

and liquid states as well as to move around.

As the website Tech Xplore pointed out, other similar materials require external heat sources

such as heat guns and electrical currents to induce a change of states; but now, the robots can use a

heat source inside itself to change states independently. During the robots” experimental trials. the

scientists conducted a number of tests. These tests included having the robots melt into liquid and

re-form to escape a prison-like cage. It can remove a foreign object from and deliver medicinal

drugs to a model stomach. The robot is also able to build and repair hard-to-reach circuits. The

robots’ ability to switch between states of matter allows for a number of possible uses and

advancements in different fields, such as the biomedical and circuit assembly (

组装

) industries.

Still, in the words of senior author Carmel Majidi at Carnegie Mellon University, for now

these are all just “proofs of concept” which show the abilities of these new kind of robots.

12

Why can the robots switch between solid and liquid?

A

Because they consist of a unique metal and magnetic particles.

B

Because they can reduce the potential for physical damage.

C

Because they are able to change the stiffness of their body.

D

Because they have external heat sources any time any where.

13

What does the underlined word “induce” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A

witness

B

remove

C

cause

D

accept

14

What will be the function of the robot?

A

To help scientists inspire sea cucumbers.

B

To put a couch into a hard-to-reach space.

C

To get rid of foreign objects from an organ.

D

To assist people in escaping a prison-like cage.

15

Where is the text probably taken from?

A

A health report

B

A science fiction.

C

A Chemistry textbook.

D

A scientific magazine.

If you want to memorize something quickly and thoroughly, repetition won’t cut

it____16____Below are some universal steps to mastering the art of recalling so that you can start

memorizing a ton of data in a short amount of time.

Make preparations.

Pay close attention to which environment you choose. For most people, this means choosing

an area with few distractions. Figure out what is most beneficial to your learning so that you can

get started. Next, start drinking some tea.____17____.

Record what you’re memorizing.

This is especially useful if you’re trying to memorize information from a lecture. Use a tape

recorder to track all of the acquired facts being spoken and listen to it. If you’re trying to

memorize a speech, record yourself reading the speech aloud and listen to yourself speaking.

____18____

.

Before you start trying to recall everything from memory, write and re-write the information.

Now that you have everything written down in one set of notes, separate them into sections. You

can use color coding to differentiate between subjects. This will help you become more familiar

with what you’re trying to memorize.

Apply repetition to accumulated memorization

.

____19____

. As you memorize each set of text, accumulate it by adding the new

information to what you’ve just learned. This will keep everything within your short-term memory

from fading. Keep doing this until you have memorized that section and you are able to recall the

entire thing. Do not move on to another section until you have memorized that one completely.

Teach it to someone (or yourself )

.

The most effective method for me when I was in school was to teach the information to

someone else. ____20____. If what you’ve learned needs to be recited literally, then do this in

front of someone as well in order to get a feel for what it will be like to recite the text to the

intended audience.

Take a break

.

Finally, let your mind breathe. Go for a short time without thinking about what you just

learned and come back to it later on. You’ll find out what you really know, of course, and this will

help you focus on the sections you might be weakest at.

A

Recall entire sections.

B

However, recalling something will.

C

Write everything down and section your notes.

D

You can lecture the knowledge to someone sitting right in front of you.

E

For each line of text, repeat it a few times and try to recall it without looking.

F

While doing unrelated tasks, go over the information by listening to your tape recordings.

G

Many scientific studies have confirmed green tea as a natural fuel for improving memory.

Boys like to be considered to be popular with others. Martin was such a young and generous

boy, who thought he had loads of good friends in school. He was always showing off to his family

members that he had the maximum number of friends in school. Also, he claimed how friendly he

was with everyone. His family members wanted him to recognize the reality, thus not being

cheated in the future.

One day as he was talking triumphantly about his friends at home again, his father called him

for a bet. Father said, “Martin, I bet you for the cycle you wanted.” Martin. “What’s the bet?”

Father thought for a while and answered, “I bet you do not have as many friends as you think.

Everyone is not your real friend. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than your classmates, in

other words, they are just your fair-weather friends.” Martin, without a second thought, accepted

the challenge.

However, he had no idea how to test whether his classmates were real friends or not, so he

asked his father about the testing way. A bright smile spread across the face of his father, “Wait a

minute. I have just exactly what you need. It is a special item in my collection. Let me go and

bring it.” Martin waited curiously. Several minutes later, Martin’s father returned, walking towards

him, looking like he was carrying something heavy. But Martin could not see anything.

His father explained, “You see, this is a magic chair. It is invisible, and it is rather difficult to

sit on it. You take this to your school. If you manage to sit on it, the special chair will activate its

magic. Then you will be able to tell who are your real friends.”

The next day, brave and determined, Martin took the magic invisible chair to school.
