“There's Always a John” By Darla Boyd
My first year of teaching, there was a kid named John in my cl
ass. John was difficult to control and he nearly drove me craz
y. While talking about him one day, an old teacher put his han
d on my shoulder and said, “There will always be a John. You
r job is to learn to discover what makes him different and help
him succeed.” The next year, there was indeed another John.
But that advice taught me that there is something to appreciat
e in everyone.
“An Early Key Lesson” By Elaine West
Before I began my first teaching job, my mother, a teacher of
30 years, gave me a very special gift, five simple words that h
ave had an effect on my entire life. “Make friends with the janit
or(门
卫).” Her wisdom taught me the respect for all types of chara
cters and continues to enrich my life to this day. Just five little
words but what an impact they can have when you take them
to heart.
“Raising Mommy” By Jan Davis
Being a mother can always present challenges and rewards.
Someone told me early that children will teach you everything
you need to know. Being a mother is being raised. Our childre
n become our advisers. Their dreams become our professors,
as we are taking notes carefully. The sounds of their laughter
and smiles are a great reward to us. Their tears remind us th
at it is okey to fail, and that we should wipe the tears away an
d try again.

Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Th
roughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The s
ea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel
to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two–
thirds of the world's population lives within 80 kilometers of th
e sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resour
ces to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginnin
g to be used up. The sea, however, still can be expected to su
pply many of man's needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's tech
nology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carri
ed out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist
ing on the ocean floor are ready to be developed.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large qua
ntities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient sk
ill practiced in the past mainly by eastern people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy
. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can
be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean c
urrents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply und
er the sea. The development of strong, new materials has ma
de this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Expe
rts believe that by the year 2020 the problems that prevent us
from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of
the sea will be largely solved.
