Negative transfer, also known as interference, occurs when

a learner's prior knowledge or language background hinders

their ability to learn a new language. This can happen when the

structures or rules of the learner's first language conflict

with those of the second language. Here are some examples:

1. Spanish speakers may have difficulty with English word

order because Spanish has a more flexible word order. For

example, in Spanish, one could say 'Yo te quiero' (I you love)

or 'Te quiero yo' (You love I), whereas in English, the subject

comes before the verb and the object comes after, so it must

be 'I love you.'

2. Chinese speakers may struggle with English verb tenses

because Chinese does not have a system of verb conjugation. In

English, the verb changes depending on the tense (e.g.

walk/walked/will walk), but in Chinese, the verb remains the

same regardless of tense.

3. French speakers may have difficulty with English

pronunciation because English has many vowel sounds that do not

exist in French. For example, the English 'i' sound in 'bit'

and 'kitten' does not exist in French, and the French 'u' sound

in 'tu' and 'sur' does not exist in English.

4. Arabic speakers may struggle with English articles (a,

an, the) because Arabic does not have articles. In English, the

choice of article depends on whether the noun is countable or

uncountable, singular or plural, and whether it is specific or

general.

To overcome negative transfer, learners need to be aware

of the differences between their first language and the second

language, and practice the new language as much as possible to

reinforce the correct structures and rules.。
