“Which is the right dustbin for my garbage(垃圾)?” This may be the
most-asked question in our city since it started a new garbage-sorting(垃圾分类)
program this autumn. The garbage is sorted into four types: recyclable(可回收的),
dangerous, wet, and dry.
Recyclable garbage includes newspapers, magazines and books. Some
metal(金属), like iron and copper, as well as glass bottles and other glass can also
be recycled. Plastic bottles, foam plastic and rubber are all this group members
except plastic bags. It’s easy to tell what is the dangerous garbage. It’s harmful
to our environment. For example, waste batteries, drugs, medicine can cause
different pollution(污染) and even destroy our environment. These kinds of junk
needs special safety processing(处理). The wet include the things like vegetables,
fruit, leftovers, leaves and so on. Most of them come from the kitchen, so they are
called kitchen garbage. The dry contain two kinds. One mainly refers to
Non-recyclable paper, such as paper cups, copy paper, toilet paper, etc. The other
includes clothes, cigarette ends, dust, and shells. The garbage which doesn’t
belong to the above three types will be always sorted in this group.
When learning about the four types of garbage, many people might be
confused about how to properly sort it. To help people figure this out, China’s
tech companies(科技公司) are giving a hand. For example, if you want to know
which dustbin your wet wipes(湿巾) should go in, you can just open a mini app(小
程序) WeChat or Alipay and look for “wet wipes”. The app will give you the
answer right away. Soon, you might do it in an easier way. Maybe you can just take
a photo of the garbage and then be told where it should go.
This kind of technology(技术) is called image recognition(图像识别). It uses
artificial intelligence(AI,人工智能). Many companies around the world are making
garbage-sorting robots(机器人) that use this technology. For example, AMP
Robotics in the US has made a robot that can sort food and drink packages(包装).
By “seeing” pictures on the packaging, the robot will pick up the trash and put it
in the right place.
The future of garbage-sorting looks good. But it’s not the best way. The best
thing we can do is to make less garbage in the first place.
