Giving someone good news is easy, but what about bad news? Are there any good ways to give bad news without
making people too upset? The following steps might help:
Say something positive. Try to start or end the conversation with some good news, so that it’s not all bad. For example,
“ You did very well in the interview, but unfortunately we’ve given the job to somebody else.”
Prepare your listener for the news. Use phrases to introduce what you’re going to say, like “Unfortunately, …”, “ I’m
really sorry , but…” or “ I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news.” This gives the listener time to prepare for what you’re
going to say.
Try to give a reason. People like know why things go wrong. Try to explain the decision. If someone doesn’t get the job,
can you explain why? If you have to cancel an appointment, try to give a reason.
Use a softtoneof voice. If you’re giving someone bad news, try to use a soft, calm voice to make your sound kind. Say
things to show you understand, like “I’m really sorry.” Or “I know this must be disappointing.”

In front of my daughter, Shelly, was a bowl filled with cabbage. She hated cabbage. She only sat there in silence with
tears in her eyes.
“Shelly, my dear, why don’t you eat a little? If not, your mum will shout at us.”
Shelly didn’t feel happy. “OK, dad. I will eat, just a little.” Then Shelly said, “Dad, if I eat it all, will you give me what I
want?”
“Yes.”
Slowly she began to eat. It took her almost half an hour to finish all the food in the bowl. Then she came up to me and
said, “Dad, I want to have my hair cut off!”
“Shelly, why don’t you ask for something else? If we see your head like that, we’ll feel very sad,” I said.
“But Dad, you promised! Now you’re going back on your words. ”
I had to keep my promise. Shelly had all her hair cut off. She smiled.
On Monday morning, I took Shelly to school. Just when I arrived, a boy got out of a car and shouted, “Shelly, please
wait for me!”
Guess what? The boy had no hair, either.
“Sir, your daughter is great!” a man got out of the car and said, “This boy is my son, Harish. He has cancer. He lost his
hair when he got ill. Shelly cut hers off so Harish felt less different. She is a special girl.”

In Europe, small cars have always been more popular than large cars. In the United States, large cars and midsize cars
are more popular than smaller cars. As a result, European automakers used to make different kinds of small cars while
American automakers used to build bigger, heavier cars. However, these days, automakers in both America and Europe
produce cars of different sizes. This is because most automakers sell their cars all over the world.
The price of gasoline (
汽油
) is one reason for differences in car choices. Since gasoline is more expensive in Europe,
many Europeans want smaller, lighter cars that will travel a long way on a gallon (
加仑
) of gasoline.
Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many European cities have narrow, winding (
弯曲的
) streets.
In these cities a small car is easier to control than a large one.
For a long time, few Americans bought small cars. Instead they chose large cars, because these
roomy
cars were more
comfortable for large families and long trips. Some people also liked the powerful engines (
发动机
) that large cars had.
Since gasoline was cheap, drivers did not mind that the large cars used a lot of gasoline.
But in the 1970s, there were gasoline shortages in the United States. The price of gasoline went up. Though large cars
were still more popular than smaller cars, sales of small cars increased. Some people also bought small cars because
these cars caused less air pollution than larger cars.
Today, Americans’ car choices are still changing. Though Americans are still buying many small cars, the fastest
growing sales are for certain kinds of large cars. These types of cars are called minivans and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
They are very popular today. But of course, that could change tomorrow.
