Installation

Guide

Self-Adhesive Products

ABOUT THIS GUIDE

The purpose of this guide is to provide general practical guidelines for the correct

installation of various self-adhesive Everlux products.

The successful installation of self-adhesive products is strongly influenced by the

receiving surface and by ensuring the correct preparatory steps are taken.

To help ensure successful installation it highly recommended that the steps outlined in

this guide are followed.

I - Evaluation of the Receiving Surface

Rough, Uneven

or Porous

Surfaces

Rough, uneven and porous surfaces such as untreated wood, concrete etc.

are not conducive to the successful installation of self-adhesive products as

the receiving surface needs to be smooth and even. If the receiving surface

conditions are not suitable then the need for alternative fixing methods

such as silicon, adhesive or fixings may be appropriate. Should this be the

case then rigid PVC signs are likely to be more appropriate.

Parallelism of

the installation

surface

Surface parallelism is essential to the adhesion quality. On surfaces where

there is no complete parallelism, the need for alternative installation

solutions, such as mastic glue, or structural glue, bolting to supporting

structures, or directly to the surface, must be checked.

Curved or

Rounded

Surfaces

Self-adhesive products in general are more suited for installation on

flat surfaces. However, successful application on curved surfaces can

be achieved but it is important to verify that the tension created by the

curvature of the surface does not exceed the adhesiveness of the product.

If the curvature is gradual along the sign length then successful installation

is likely to be achieved. To increase the bond effectiveness between the

adhesive and substrate, a premier must be used. According to the item II of

this guide.

Some coated surfaces may present a unique challenge for the

successful installation of self-adhesive signs as they may have special

characteristics a low surface energy which may hinder adherence. Such

surfaces may require special preparation such as priming. It is the

installer’s responsibility to evaluate the surface and, if necessary, ask the

manufacturer for guidance. Examples of coating materials may include:

PP, PS, TPO, PTFE, PBT, PVDF, PU amongst others.(*)

II - Preparation of the Receiving Surface

It is always advisable to assume that all receiving surfaces will require preparation before self-

adhesive products are installed. Please follow the guidelines provided to ensure that they are dust and

grease free and suitable for installation.

Cleaning, degreasing and

preparation

For this operation a

degreasing solution should

be used: for example,

isopropyl alcohol, white

spirits, thinners or similar

products.

The cleaning operation must be

done in two phases:

1º Apply the degreasing

solution/primer to the surface

and wipe the entire surface in a

circular motion using absorbent

tissues or a cloth and ensure

that it is free from residue, dirt

and grease.

On curved surfaces or other

surfaces that are difficult to

stick, a suitable primer must

be used instead of isupropyl

alcohol.

nd

Apply the degreasing

solution/primer to the surface

and clean in one direction only.

DryingAllow to dry fully and ensure

all the cleaning solution has

evaporated and once prepared

avoid contact with the receiving

surface prior to the application

of the self-adhesive product

being installed.

2 - 3 min.

III - Product Application

Remove the protective

backing from the sign

Remove the protective backing

from one of the corners

ensuring that contact with

the self-adhesive surface is

avoided.

Product Application

Position the sign on the

prepared receiving surface and

avoid the formation of bubbles

during application.

The application temperature

should be between 15ºC and

25ºC and should never be

below 15ºC.

Apply pressure throughout the

sign area.

It is recommended that a roller

is used during application

as this provides an even

distribution across the whole

surface.

The success of the installation

will depend on the amount of

contact between the adhesive

and the installation surface.

A strong and even pressure

across the whole sign surface

will help ensure maximum

adhesion possible is achieved.

Adhesion

Full adhesion is attained

over a period of time with

approximately 50% of final

adhesion being achieved after

approximately 20 minutes, 90%

adhesion after 24 hours and

100% adhesion after 72 hours

(at room temperature).

100% - 72h

the relevant self-adhesive product.
