Formal---learned words, literary words, or “big” words
Characteristics of formal words:
1) Mainly appear in formal writing, such as scholarly or theoretical works, political
and legal documents, and formal lectures and addresses.
2) Many such words contain three or more than three syllables.
3) Most of them are of Greek or Latin origin.
4) They are seldom used in daily conversation, except for special purposes.
Characteristics of common words:
1) They are used by people every day.
2) They can be found in all kinds of writing.
Characteristics of colloquial words:
1) They are mainly used in informal or familiar conversation.
2) They are seldom used in formal writing, and in literary works their main use is to
record people's thoughts and dialogues.
3) They are usually short words of one or two syllables.
4) Most of them are of Saxon origin (i. e., not borrowed from Greek, Latin, or French).
Features of slang words
1) Highly informal
2) Vivid and interesting when used appropriately
3) Offensive or funny when used inappropriately
Features of dialectal words:
1) Shown in one’s pronunciation
2) Omit certain sounds
3) Used by uneducated speakers
