The Shanxi Province Middle School English Exam: Scoring

Criteria Uncovered

As students, we all know that the English exam is a crucial

part of the middle school entrance exam here in Shanxi Province.

But have you ever wondered how those essays and reading

comprehension answers are actually graded? I decided to do

some digging and find out the official scoring criteria and

detailed rules the graders use. Here's what I uncovered:

The English exam is graded on a 150 point scale, with

different sections and question types weighted differently. The

writing section makes up 60 points of the total score. Within the

writing, there are three main areas graders look at:

Content (30 points)

This refers to whether your essay addresses all parts of the

writing prompt, has a clear perspective/thesis, provides relevant

details and examples to support your points, and has a solid

conclusion. Basically, do you actually answer what the prompt is

asking?

Language (20 points)

For language, graders look at your vocabulary usage,

grammar accuracy, and sentence structure complexity. Using

simple sentences with basic vocab will not get you full points

here. You need to show mastery of more advanced language.

Organization (10 points)

Your essay should be logically organized with clear

transitions between ideas and paragraphs. Having a distinct

introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is important.

The reading comprehension section is worth 60 points total

as well. Graders look at two key areas:

Comprehension (40 points)

This is the biggie - do you actually understand the main

ideas, details, inferences, and vocabulary from the reading

passages? The questions test your comprehension at various

levels.

Language Mastery (20 points)
