DETAIL SPECIFICATION

PHOSPHATE COATING, HEAVY, MANGANESE OR ZINC BASE

This specification is approved for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of

Defense.

1. SCOPE

1.1 Scope. This specification covers two types of heavy phosphate coating for ferrous

metals, applied by immersion. The coatings consist of a manganese phosphate or zinc

phosphate base and, when specified, a supplementary treatment (see 6.1).

1.2 Classification. Coatings are of the following types and classes, as specified (see 6.2):

Class 2

Class 3

Class 4

Class 1

Manganese Phosphate Base

Supplementary preservative treatment or coating, as

specified

Supplementary treatment with lubricating oil conforming to

MIL-PRF-16173, Grade 3 or MIL-PRF-3150

With no supplementary coating or coating as specified

Zinc phosphate base

Supplementary preservative treatment or coating, as

specified

Supplementary treatment with preservative conforming to

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

2.1 General. The documents listed in this section are specified in sections 3 and 4 of this

specification. This section does not include documents in other sections of this specification or

recommended for additional information or as examples. While every effort has been made to

ensure the completeness of this list, documents users are cautioned that they must meet all

specified requirements documents cited in sections 3 and 4 of this specification, whether or not

they are listed.

2.2 Government documents.

2.2.1 Specifications, standards, and handbooks. The following specifications, standards, and

handbooks form a part of this document to the extent specified herein. Unless otherwise

specified, the issues of these documents are those listed in the issue of the Department of

Defense Index of Specifications and Standards (DODISS) and supplement thereto, cited in the
