Edward Snowden is an American computer professional and former American National Security

Agency subcontractor, who blew the whistle about many of his employer's immoral activities. The

reason he gave was that "their practices were disturbing" and he thought it was the right thing to show

the world what CIA (美中情局) was up to. He revealed that NSA (美国安局) was included in some

domestic spying practices, which he thought were viola-tion of privacy and spent several years

collecting evidences. Snowden, worrying his safety, fled to Hong Kong and met with a reporter from

"The Guardian" to get his findings printed, shocking the world, especially the USA. Presently,

Snowden is staying in Russia and stands strongly with his decision of leaking the documents. A

documentary made on his life and works, titled "Citizenfour" won an Oscar in 2015. Snowden remains

a national hero in eyes of most of Ameri-can public, while an outlaw for NSA.

Edward Snowden was born on June 21, 1983 in North Carolina, USA. His parents separated while

Snowden was a teenager but he didn't let that affect his academics and went on scoring top ranks in

school. His mind was sharp and his I.Q. was well over 140, making him one of the rarest of human

beings who possess high level intelligence.

However, an illness caused him to remain absent from the high school for a long stretch, and he failed

in a GED test and went on to attend classes at Anne Arundel Community College. He didn't even

finish his undergraduate degree, and went on to attempt a masters degree at the University of

Liverpool. He was pretty much influenced with Japanese and Chinese culture, which encouraged him

to learn Japanese and Chinese along with Chinese martial arts. He adapted Buddhism as his religion at

the age of 20.

Snowden met Lindsay Mills back in America and the couple started dating, but right before the leaks

he broke up with her, citing her safety to be the main concern. However, when he went to live in

Russia, Lindsay joined him there and the couple has been together ever since. In 2015, Mills showed

herself at the Oscar award ceremony, when Poitras, the director, accepted the award for "Citizenfour".

Stilton Cheese Rolling

May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the

only people in the world who include these rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a

variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they

must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane (赛道). Competition is fierce

and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but

understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with

beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.

Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth

Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from

as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that

is not just spicy, but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their

destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three clays every

March. You might like to try a chocolate—covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in

the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you

don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you!

La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight

On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts Ea Tomatina—the world's

largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the

week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes-official fight-starters

get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd.

The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have

been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the

river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash!

Cultual Breaks by Brian Aldiss

Reviewed by Paul Kincaid

Brian Aldiss is an amazing and frustrating writer. When he is on song, his style is forceful,

disturbing and delectable. But he is a restless writer. He came into his own in the enthusiastic and

experimental atmosphere of the New Wave, and he has been driven to try the new and the different

ever since. That he is still experimenting now, 50 years after his first appearance, is a measure of a

man who has never been prepared to settle back on his laurels.

The Secrets of Jin-Shei by Alma Alexander

Reviewed by Donna McMahon

With so many fantasy novels using European-derived settings and mythology, ancient China makes

a refreshing change. The landscape is tempting and yet familiar enough to feel very real, and the

author uses magic sparingly, in ways appropriate to her society. This and the complex detail put into

the backdrop makes the novel feel very much like historical fiction.

stranded, Pen must first get back to Paranor. His rescue attempt can only begin from within the

The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the time of year when warmer

weather begins. People celebrate the coming of summer with customs that are expressions of joy and

hope after a long winter. Today, May Day activities have been moved to the May Day holiday on the

first Monday of the month. It is a public holiday when families take advantage of the time off to visit

some of the UK's many attractions, including parks, zoos, historic buildings, ancient towns and

villages and beautiful countryside.

May Day celebrations have their origins in the Roman festival of Flora, the goddess of fruit and

flowers, which marked the beginning of summer. People would decorate their houses and villages

with leaves and flowers they picked at daybreak in the belief that the vegetation spirits would bring

good luck. In the very early morning, young girls went into the fields and washed their faces with dew

(露水). They believed this made them very beautiful for the following year.

May Day was an important day in the Middle Ages and was a favorite holiday of many English

villages. People of the time used to cut down young trees and stick them in the ground in the village to

mark the arrival of summer. This is the origin of the maypole (五月柱). People danced around them in

celebration of the end of winter. Maypoles were once common all over England and were kept from

one year to the next. The tallest maypole is said to have been put up in London on the Strand in 1661.

It stood more than 143 feet high and was cut down in 1717, when it was used by Newton to support a

The National Storytelling Youth Olympics is an event where thousands of kids from grades 6 to 12

compete against each other by telling stories. It is sponsored by the Master's Degree Program in

Reading and Storytelling at East Tennessee State University. The sole purpose of this event is to

promote and encourage both the art and science of storytelling among middle school and high school

students. Although this event is competitive, its underlying intent and goal is to provide students

across the nation with a reason to practice numerous noncompetitive skills.

Those skills include skillful sportsmanship, responsible behaviour, and an attitude of respect for

others and the storytelling genre. The eventual goal of the National Storytelling Youth Olympics is to

encourage every classroom in America to discover (or rediscover) the beauty of storytelling and story

performance.

The National Storytelling Youth Olympics takes place usually around the first weekend in March.

Students from all over the country arrive by bus, plane, or automobile in Johnson City, Tennessee.

They usually arrive on Thursday or Friday. Those that arrive on Thursday take advantage of their

early arrival by telling stories at local: schools. On Friday, an evening meal is prepared for all

contestants, coaches, and parents. Games are played, stories are told, and lifetime friendships begin.

Saturday is the day of the big event. A luncheon (午餐会) is held in the afternoon so contestants can

familiarize themselves with the surroundings and do a sound check.

The event is divided into three categories separated by grades. Contestants are judged not only by

their storytelling performance, but also by the attitude and behaviour they display during the entire

weekend. A winner is picked from each of the three categories; however, there is an overall winner

who is granted the name of Grand Torch Bearer. This person is selected not only by the judges, but

also by the contestants. After the winners have been announced, the contestants retreat back to their

hotel where a celebratory ice cream party is held; and believe it or not, they tell more stories! This is

what the National Storytelling Youth Olympics is all about: developing a love for the art of

storytelling.

I grew up on a 50-acre farm in the small rural community of Catawissa, Missouri, as the sixth of seven

children. My parents often noted during meals how everything on the table except the sugar and flour

came from the land. Besides running the farm, Dad was also a carpenter.

In the fall of 1970, he was working on a house when the ladder broke. His back was fractured in two

places. He stayed in the hospital for three weeks with his head and feet down, permitting his back to

be straight correctly so the bones would combine.

On Thanksgiving, Dad was still in the hospital. We always butchered hogs the day after the holiday,

and that year my uncle showed up with a couple of cousins to help my three older brothers prepare our

year's supply of pork. After Dad returned home, he was in a back brace and unable to work. I was too

young to realize our family had no money coming in as Christmas approached.

One night we heard a car coming up the long driveway. We kids were curious about who was visiting.

Peggy Phelan was at the door, holding an envelope filled with money. She told my dad she had

collected money in the community and was there to deliver it. He tried to protest but Peggy would

have none of it. I can still hear her saying, "Archie, whenever someone's baler (打包机) is broken, you

bale their hay. Someone passes away, Altha is cooking. It's our turn."

That evening, this 6-year-old understood what being a good neighbor was, and that because her

parents were good neighbors, their kindness would be returned.

I learned later that my mom's sisters all "adopted" one of us kids to help with Christmas, and we

received gifts baskets from more than one organization.

My parents were used to being the givers and not the receivers of such generosity. They had a bit of

pride to swallow, but continued all of their lives to show us kids the value of kindness.

After the death of my mother a few years ago I found myself struggling to deal with my grief, and that

of my father. It was two days before Christmas when mum died and that made me feel heartbroken.

Mentally, I became distanced from everything: I shut down my grief and focused on dealing with the

practical stuff—just surviving each day. The problem was that every time I tried to ignore my grief,

the pain and loss came back. I even started to avoid the places that my mother and I used to visit so

much together.

I realized that was not a good way to be, and went looking for anything that could help me deal with it.

I wanted to understand why I was acting the way I was. I visited many psychologists and the local

priest. They were friendly and helpful people but I quickly realized that they simply put forward the

same information over and over again, expecting me to just accept it and "get over" my grief. There

was no information available about why I and my father were reacting, nor about what to do, how to

understand and move forward.

I was determined to understand what my father and I were going through so I started to do my own

research. I read many books on grief and spoke to other people who were also in the process of

dealing with grief. As I did that, I came to understand that, at some stage in our lives, we all face the

loss of someone, or something, that we care greatly about. I also realized that in almost every case,

there is absolutely nothing that we can do to prevent that loss, or change the circumstances in which it

occurs. Unavoidably, we all must deal with the fact that, no matter how painful we feel by the loss, the

world around us will go on as if nothing has changed.

33. How does the author feel about the information from psychologists and the local priest?

Around the world there are some festivals that for some of us may sound bizarre.

In England they celebrate the rolling cheese race, which occurs every year during the last Monday

in May. This festival's characteristic is a contest where an official (官员) rolls cheese down a steep hill

and festival-goers go chasing after it. The winner is the first one to reach and catch the cheese.

Another festival celebrated in England is the world championship of grimaces (鬼脸). It is a

celebration that dates back to 1297 and is celebrated during the month of September. The task is to

perform the best grimace using anything you can to win.

The worldwide championship of wife lifting is celebrated in Finland. The game is based on Viking

traditions where a man should carry away his neighbour's wife. According to the rules, any woman

above 17 is considered as a wife, so if you are within this age, take care while visiting this country

during the month of July.

Many of you have watched Pirates of the Caribbean and have known something about pirates. The

19th of September has been declared worldwide as the day to talk like a pirate. Plenty of people have

celebrated it thanks to the publicity (宣传) on the Internet.

First staged in 1998, the Boryeong Mud Festival is an attraction that pulls more than a million

visitors to the Korean city. As you all know, the town is said to be rich in minerals, so there is no

shortage of mud. Mud is trucked onto Daecheon Beach for tourists and locals to enjoy the festival to

their best.

The Monkey Buffet Festival is held in Thailand to develop tourism. It's an annual feast held for

The old Chinese saying "as happy as spending the New Year" might be outdated now in the busy

modern world. The Spring Festival is regarded as the most important festival for Chinese people and

an occasion for all family members to get together, like Christmas in the West, But many traditional

customs accompanying the Spring Festival, however, have weakened in practice.

Setting off fireworks was once the most typical custom of the Spring Festival. People thought the

sputtering (爆裂) sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, the activity has been completely

or partially forbidden in big cities for years as the government has taken security, noise and pollution

factors into consideration.

"In recent years, some cities have begun to allow people to light fireworks during limited hours at

the Spring Festival, surrendering to (屈从于) public demand. Respecting folk traditions is a gesture of

respect toward spublic opinion," said Zhou Xing, a folklore researcher.

"As people gain more income and it becomes easierto buy daily goods, the New Year holiday is just

like any other. After long workdays, many people use the New Year holiday to take a rest, rather than

visiting friends and neighbors. The process of making and enjoying the family dinner on Spring

Festival Eve is the most important thing. However, many families would like to eat out to save time

and energy," said Li Shunzhi, a resident of Harbin, Heilongjiang.

"I enjoy the holidays very much in the countryside. My family has been preparing for the Spring

Festival more than two weeks before the holiday, cleaning the house, buying holiday goods and

decorating the house with paper cuttings. On New Year's Eve, the whole family stays up to see the

New Year in, and in the days to follow, a series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern

dancing, Lantern Festival and temple fairs will be held. Without the ancient traditions, the holiday is

nothing to us," said Zhang hui, from Hebei.

Hui often spends two weeks preparing for the Spring Festival.

Hui is used to spending the Spring Festival with his family.
