Japan to release Fukushima water into ocean from Aug. 24

From: Reuters

Japan said on Tuesday it will start releasing into the sea more than 1 million metric tons of

treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant on Aug. 24, going ahead

with a plan heavily criticised by China.

The plan, approved two years ago by the Japanese government as crucial to decommissioning

the plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), has also faced criticism from local

fishing groups fearing reputational damage.

Japan to start releasing Fukushima wastewater as soon as Thursday

From: CNN

In July, the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded that

Japan’s plan aligns with international safety standards and would have a “negligible radiological

impact to people and the environment” – which it reiterated on Tuesday after the government’s

announcement, saying the plan had undergone two years of “detailed review.”

But that hasn’t reassured many of Japan’s neighbors, with officials from China and the Pacific

Islands voicing alarm and opposition to the plan. Beijing will take “necessary measures” to

safeguard food safety and its people’s health, said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang

Wenbin on Tuesday, adding they “strongly urge the Japanese side to rectify its wrongful decision.”

常用句型:conclude from sth that ...,

How Will the Fukushima Water Release Impact the Pacific Ocean?

From: Marine Technology News

Japanese authorities are preparing to release treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific

Ocean, nearly 12 years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. This will relieve pressure on more than

1,000 storage tanks, creating much-needed space for other vital remediation works. But the plan has

attracted controversy.

At first glance, releasing radioactive water into the ocean does sound like a terrible idea.

Greenpeace feared the radioactivity released might change human DNA. China and South Korea

expressed disquiet, while Pacific Island nations were concerned about further nuclear contamination

of the Blue Pacific. One academic publication claimed the total global social welfare cost could

exceed US$200 billion.

高分表达:exceed expectations(出乎预料)

Japan to Release Fukushima Wastewater Into Ocean From Thursday As Hong Kong,

Macau Rush to Ban Seafood Imports

From: EARTH·ORG

The primary concern surrounding the Fukushima wastewater release plan is the potential

environmental impact on the ocean. Environmentalists argue that releasing radioactive water into

the sea may harm marine life, disrupt ecosystems, and endanger human health through the

consumption of contaminated seafood. A fish living near drainage outlets at the nuclear plant in May

was found to contain levels of radioactive cesium 180 times above Japan’s safety limits. In 2016,

local authorities, who regularly monitor all seafood species in the area for radioactivity, installed

nets to prevent potentially contaminated fish from escaping.

The food was not fit for human

consumption.

Each student’s progress is

closely monitored.
