HAVE your parents ever caught you misbehaving – fighting
with peers, coming home late or playing computer games when
you were supposed to be doing your homework? How did they
react? Did they try to talk to you or just yell at you?
Parents used to rely on___41___ punishments like pushing or
spanking (打屁股) to control their children’s behavior, which has
been proven to be very ___42___. Therefore, most parents now
choose to simply yell, thinking that language probably won’t
hurt as much. But is that really so?
Using harsh words such as “lazy” or “stupid” to insult
teenagers is just as harmful as hitting, according to a new study
carried out at the University of Pittsburgh, US. “It cannot reduce
or correct their problem behavior,” said Professor Ming-Te Wang,
leader of the study, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
“On the contrary, it makes it even___43___ .”
The study’s subjects were 976 two-parent families with
teenage children. Researchers asked
1
the kids about their behavior problems while questioning
parents about how often they had cursed or yelled at their kids.
Nearly half of the parents___44___ that they’d shouted at
their children in the past year. Researchers noted that the kids
whose parents used more harsh words ___45___ more behavior
problems afterwards, including fighting, stealing, lying as well as
symptoms of depression.
“Adolescence is a very sensitive period when kids are trying
to ___46___ their self-identities. When you yell, it makes
them___47___ they are not capable, that they are worthless and
useless,” Wang said. “This may explain why so many parents
say that no matter how loud they shout, their teenagers don’t
listen.”
While harsh yelling can stop bad behavior in the moment, it
doesn’t___48___ children to behave how parents want them to,
according to Professor Alan Kazdin of Yale University, US. What
parents need to do is praise their children for good behavior.
If parents really need to___49___ their kids, they should try
things like taking away smart phones and reminding them that
good behavior will get them back. After all, “we want to teach
kids, not hurt them,” said Kazdin.

Students Hair Problem in Schools Children’s’ hairstyles
often attract disapproval from adults. Even in the U.S., a five-year-old boy from Ohio was___50___to go to kindergarten unless he
changed his Mohawk. Such problems also appear in Asian
countries, where different hairstyles and dresses are largely
___51___ by schools. Nowadays, students in these countries want
more___52___ . And in fact, the regulations over students’
hairstyles are not as strict as before. In Thailand, students are
allowed a___53___ range of hairstyles than traditional army-style
cuts. Girls are also able to grow their hair long.___54___ the new
rules still contain a lot of restrictions. The hairstyles issue still
arouses students’ ___55___. A 15-year-old Thai student even
wrote a letter to Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission,
saying the rules violate human rights and personal___56___. The
schools argue that complete freedom in hairstyles will make
young students more ___57___ from textbooks by pursuing
strange new hairstyles, and many___58___ a bad atmosphere
where students form their own personalities.___59___, students
believe that allowing them to choose their own hairstyles will
give them more confidence and creativity at school. ___60___, this
is not a simple right-or-wrong issue. Schools may take
more___61___ strategies to ease the tension. A junior school
teacher once asked his students to try new hairstyles during
winter vacation and take pictures for a hairstyle contest which
would be held at the beginning of the next semester. The only
requirement for the contest was that they had to___62___ their
hairstyles back when the new semester began. Everyone followed
the rule and it became a class game, ___63___ a source of tension.
This is of course not the only way to deal with the problem.
Teachers can make the school rules more ___64___ for their
students. As long as the bottom line of education is guaranteed,

A While I was waiting outside my wife’s office building for
her to get out of work, I saw a beggar coming my way from across
the parking lot. “I hope he doesn’t ask me for any money,” I
thought. He didn’t. He came and sat in front of the bus stop,
but he didn’t look like he could have enough money to ride the
bus. After a few minutes he spoke. “That’s a pretty car,” he
said, pointing to my car. He was ragged (衣 衫褴褛), but he had
an air of dignity about himself. I gave him a smile and continued
cleaning my car. He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected
asking for money never came. As the silence between us widened,
it seemed that a voice inside me said, “Ask him if he needs any
help.” I was sure that he would say “yes”, but I listened to the
inner voice. “Do you need any help?” I asked. He answered in
three simple but meaningful words that I shall never forget. We
often look for wisdom in great men and women, and we expect
it from those of higher learning and achievements. I expected
nothing but a dirty hand from him, but he said three words that
shook me. “Don’t we all?” he said. I was feeling high,
successful and important above a beggar in the street, until those
three words hit me like a shot. Don’t we all? I needed help.
Maybe not for a bus fare or for a place to sleep, but I needed
help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only for a bus fare,
but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those
three little words still ring true. No matter how much you have,
no matter how much you have achieved, you need help, too. No
matter how little you have, no matter how loaded you are with
problems, even without money or a place to sleep, you can give
help.

C Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday
driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide
turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to
go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the
wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver
is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often,
says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.
5
We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype. He told us about an
incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the
eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to
use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an
address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn’t
until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they
actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they
lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS
is kind of 'garbage in garbage out'.”
Mister Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says,
what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the
shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One
problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small
screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give
you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really
giving you the overview that you would need to know that it’s
going to the wrong place.”
Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the
University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a
project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The
two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing
cameras in people’s cars. They wrote a paper based on their
research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving
with GPS.” It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause
confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated,
incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing
issues related to when GPS commands are given.
Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a
better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS
systems work together.
72. In Paragraph 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the
conversation to _____________.
A. build up his own reputation
B. laugh at his stupid friend
C. prove the GPS system is only garbage D. describe an
example of human error
73. With which of the following statement would Barry Brown
most likely agree?
A. GPS units are to blame for the most GPS service failures.
B. We should introduce higher standard for the driving
license.
C. Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS
systems.
D. Drivers, GPS systems and passengers should unite to
improve GPS systems.
74. What is Mr. Brown’s attitude towards GPS?
A. Unconcerned
B. One-sided C. Objective
D. Critical
75. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Driving With GPS Can Be Difficult
B. Driving Confusions Can Be Caused bBy Small Screen
C. Driving Without GPS Should Be Much More Convenient
D. GPS Equipment In Driving: To Be Deserted Or Improved?
D

A. What do people with an intellectual disability need? B.
What is intellectual disability? C. How do people with an
intellectual disability talk? D. What are the forms of intellectual
disability?
6
E. What causes intellectual disability? F. How do you talk to a
person with an intellectual disability?
76._________ People with intellectual disability form one of the
largest single disability groups in a
community. Intellectual disability refers to a general slowness
to learn and function within society, and the identification of
intellectual disability is usually based on an assessment of a
person’s performance in a variety of tests. An individual’s level
of performance, as assessed, can change with time and
circumstances. With skilled training and opportunity for
development, people with intellectual disability have much
greater potential for acquiring skills and for participation in
community life than previously had been thought possible.
77._________ In many western societies, five categories of
intellectual disability have traditionally been used in order to
indicate the perceived degree of difficulty an individual has with
learning. All five may occur in either children, adolescent or adult,
and show as mild, moderate, severe, profound or multiple
intellectual disabilities. 78._________ For the majority of intellectual
disabilities, there is no identifiable cause but there are some
causes that are well documented. They include: brain damage at
birth due to lack of oxygen—prolonged labor during childbirth;
brain damage before birth due to factors such as rubella, drug or
diet-related problems; damage after birth due to illnesses such
as encephalitis or accident; hereditary defects in the genes;
abnormal chromosome count resulting in, for example, Down
Syndrome. 79.________ Like everyone else, people with an
intellectual disability need a rewarding job, a satisfying place to
live and a good social life. But they may need extra support to
achieve these things. Good support services are based on the
principle of normalization-which means enabling people to be
part of the community like everyone else. 80.________ With the
introduction of the intellectually disabled into communities,
there is a need to promote awareness of communication.
Although many people may have little experience in talking with
an intellectually disabled person, there are common guidelines
that can simplify the interaction. Firstly, it is useful to remember
that people with disabilities have feelings. Speaking in the same
friendly manner as you would to anyone else is also
recommended. Being prepared to wait a little longer for replies
during a conversation with an intellectually disabled person
would undoubtedly benefit the exchange.
